Wildstar Community Discord - find game buddies and chat about the game When an item is equipped into a costume slot, it is dyeable.
You will be able to see the number of dyeable areas on a piece of gear equipped into a costume or main inventory slot.
Each item can have up to 3 dyeable areas, but there are quite a few with only 1 or 2 areas. There are even some with none.
This information is not available in the March beta, meaning that you are unable to make informed decisions about the dyes you're trying to apply.
You will be able to selectively dye on a per area basis per item more easily. The dye controls in the previous betas have not been as clearly laid out as they will be going forward.
When an item is equipped into a costume slot, it is dyeable. Gone are the days where you cannot dye gear because you have a costume equipped, or can only dye a costume piece if you equip it in your main slots.
The costume system lets you equip any piece of armor, regardless of class. If you are a light armor class, you can use Medium and Heavy armor items, in addition to the Costumes and Light Armor you can normally wear.
These items will apply no stats, but you can have the look. Weapons, on the other hand, have different rules.
We do not allow you to use weapons as costumes if they are not for your class. Weapons also cannot be hidden.
These items are iconic class identifiers, and we want them to remain that way. There are more than 2 costume slots.
In the March and April beta, costume slots unlock at levels 7, 14, 25, 35, 45 and 50, for a total of 6 available to each character. The total number we will have at launch is in flux, but there will certainly be more than 2.
We will still be locking editing to an NPC in the cities, as previously noted. We know that the hope from everyone is for these to be editable remotely.

Your outfit slots never changed as your adventuring equipment changed, unlike GW2's and WoW's approach. Also, I just checked if I could equip a heavy armour helm on my light armour restricted minstrel in LotRO and I could place and equip that outfit with heavy armour, so that's confirmed and I'll update the OP accordingly.
GW2's town outfit and the cosmetic gear that was restricted to it actually baffles me. While I like that there is such an appearance system, but it's extremely limiting and can only be used during purely roleplay encounters.
I'd rather have the freedom of having my personal look wherever possible, not only when standing around town. I prefer the freedom LotRO's system uses and they addressed a common concern quite easily.
That concern being that using appearances would be deceptive in PvP. It's an altogether other question with open world PvP.

I have been saying for years prior to their implementation that WoW should have used a type of trophy room system where you added gear to trophies.
They could not be sold once they were a trophy but it could be an unlimited list and you could use any of it to change your current gear's look.
Adding an extra in my opinion way too limited additional storage that costs money to add and remove items was odd and not very useful.
I have never tried the LotRO stuff but it sounds interesting. Kirathis , Feb 22, SiegaPlays and Yakzan like this.
For those preferring the RIFT wardrobe system over other systems, such as LotRO's system which seems pretty similar besides a few aspects, I'd like to ask why.
Is it because the item is then physically stored in the wardrobe slot unlike LotRO where the item isn't stored and only the appearance is copied?
I see there is disapproval of allowing people of light armour restrictions to use gear of higher level. I do agree that it gets a bit silly seeing clothies wearing heavy armour and that such a restriction should be in place, but I'd like to see why you feel that restriction should be there.
Is it because it is potentially deceptive to players at first glance, both in PvE and PvP?Does it reduce the impact of you being the heavy armour user and they're supposed to be wearing cloth? The current system for costumes is idiotic. Why is the costume system not integrated into the character panel?
Guild Wars 2 has a perfect example of this, so why does WildStar do it this way? Your email address will not be published. Boards WildStar Could someone explain how to use costumes?
Speak to a stylist. Take note that the costume gear will stay in that separate equipment screen.
Go for the eyes! Is there any way to save multiple sets of actual gear, rather than just changing the appearance? As in having a set of gear for tanking, healing, and DPS?
At the moment that can only be done via third party addons. I do find it weird that we can have costume set and ability set but not gear set.
